| 300 | Rachel Braverman | Air travel has severely damaging consequences. Climate change is directly affected by the use of huge amounts of fuel. Economies of developing countries are also undermined, by encouraging the growth of cash crops, which can then be air freighted. Tourism more often than not takes resources away from local residents, putting profits into the hands of global conglomorates. It is also frequently responsible for ecological damage. Tourism relies on people, usually in developed nations, being able to hop on a plane without thinking. Expanding airports is therefore a short sighted and potentially disastrous measure. Demand will only increase with supply, as can be seen with road expansion. We need to seek ways to reduce our reliance on the aeroplane. These include taxing fuel so that air travellers aren't given a bizarre discount and putting resources into less polluting means of transport. |
