More and more communication by phone, internet and tv makes less need too. The directors and execs of the airport industry should be required to live at their filth-holes themselves. Now depression and stress are at record levels in countries that have had the "benefits" of all those transport misvestments. |

| 347 | Dr Lars Mosesson | As someone who uses most forms of transport - from feet and bicycle to aeroplanes (about once every five years, on average), I believe in the use of appropriate transport. Subsidised air-transport is neither appropriate for most of its current and proposed purposes, nor sustainable. Apart from the appalling damage it does to the environment, it is subsidised by the lack of taxation and the "free" provision of local intrastructure around airports. Building ever-more runways will not cure any problems beyond the short term, any more than the M25 has. This type of expansion is the wrong solution to the wrong problem. By the time these extensions are operating, supplies of oil will be declining, and the use of this type of inefficient carbon-based transport will be obsolescent. It would be good to see the revenue from the tax on the fuel for all international flights going directly to the UN. |
