| 828 | Dr Caroline Lucas MEP | Aviation is the fastest growing source of the greenhouse gas emissions which are fuelling the devastating climate change which is costing thousands of lives annually � and poses the single greatest threat to human civilisation as we know it. Yet rather than seek to manage demand for flying and mitigate aviation�s greenhouse gas emissions � let alone the social impact of the pollution, noise and congestion suffered by the those living near airports � this government gives airlines some �9bn a year in tax breaks and hidden subsidies and has sanctioned the largest runway-building programme for a generation. The Government�s support for aviation expansion has been widely criticised by local authorities, environment groups � and parliament itself. In September the Environmental Audit Committee criticised the �glaring inconsistencies� between the Government�s stated policies on climate change and aviation. Just last week a report by the House of Lords EU Sub-Committee on the Environment and Agriculture called on the Government to take the lead of reducing aviation emissions across the EU. I have joined the hundreds of activists who have already signed the Airports Pledge to signal my commitment to taking whatever non-violent lawful measures I can to prevent new runways from being built across the South-East. |

| 826 | Tony | The expansion of airports reflects the assumption that we have a �right� move more people and goods further, faster and cheaper than before. This is justified on a very narrow economic basis: �Can someone make a financial profit?� The expansion is wrong on both input and output considerations. The energy source is limited, and any foreseeable efficiency gains in aircraft design will be overtaken by increased demand. The output is a variety of combustion products, some into very sensitive parts of the atmosphere, with resulting climate variations. These may be difficult to predict in detail, but will certainly lead to a rate of change greater than that since agriculture began. Thus for the sake of my children I am willing to act in a way which may make more people question their �right� to travel, and have goods, (including food), cheaply from all over the world. |

House prices are going down in flight paths and my sleep ( in Macclesfield)has been disturbed from the noise pollution of low flying aircrafts. This happened without warning and there was no assessmant done or local questionairre about how this would affect us. No sound proofing was offered. The degredation of the environment by the amout of fuel that is required to fly a plane is not justified. More money should be put into railway types of transport. To travel on a virgin train from London to Manchester takes 2.15 hours and the plane takes 1 hour plus checking in time and travelling to the airport. Why not invest in the rail, where people can get of the line at different stops if the wish. |
